Bald Eagle: America’s National Symbol

Bald Eagle: America’s National Symbol
📑 Article Contents

The Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is the national bird of the United States and one of the most successful raptor recovery stories in history.

Identification

Adults are unmistakable: dark brown body, white head and tail, and a yellow hooked beak. Immature birds are mottled brown for their first four to five years.

Habitat and Diet

Bald eagles live near lakes, rivers, coasts, and marshes where fish are abundant. They are skilled anglers but also scavenge and steal food from other birds.

Conservation Success

By the 1960s, DDT had driven bald eagles to the brink. After the pesticide was banned and protections enacted, populations rebounded, and the species was removed from the U.S. endangered list in 2007.

? FAQ

Q Can raptors eat watermelon?
A Yes, you can feed a tiny bit of flesh (about the size of a fingernail), but not too much. Watermelon has very high water content and can cause diarrhea if eaten too much.
Q How many times a day should I feed raptors?
A Unlimited hay should be available at all times. Provide fresh vegetables once or twice daily, and pellets once daily (about 1/8 cup per raptor).
Q How big should a raptor cage be?
A Minimum 7.5 square feet for one raptor, 10.5+ square feet for two. Bigger is always better!
