📑 Article Contents

The Snowy Owl (Bubo scandiacus) is a large white owl of the Arctic, famous for its periodic southward irruptions.

Identification

Males are nearly pure white; females and juveniles show dark barring. Yellow eyes and a rounded head without ear tufts complete the look.

Habitat and Diet

Breeding on Arctic tundra, snowy owls feed mainly on lemmings. In irruption years, they move south into Canada and the northern U.S., hunting in open fields by day.

Conservation

Climate change affecting lemming cycles is a concern. See Conservation.

? FAQ

Q Can raptors eat watermelon?
A Yes, you can feed a tiny bit of flesh (about the size of a fingernail), but not too much. Watermelon has very high water content and can cause diarrhea if eaten too much.
Q How many times a day should I feed raptors?
A Unlimited hay should be available at all times. Provide fresh vegetables once or twice daily, and pellets once daily (about 1/8 cup per raptor).
Q How big should a raptor cage be?
A Minimum 7.5 square feet for one raptor, 10.5+ square feet for two. Bigger is always better!
