Cooper’s Hawk: The Backyard Bird Hunter
The Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) is a medium accipiter that has adapted remarkably well to suburbs and city parks.
Identification
It has a rounded tail, broad rounded wings, and a cap-like dark head. In flight it shows a flap-flap-glide pattern.
Hunting
Cooper’s hawks pursue songbirds and doves with agility through dense trees. They often visit backyard feeders – not for seed, but for the birds that gather there.
Cooper’s vs Sharp-shinned
The Sharp-shinned Hawk is smaller with a square-tipped tail. Size and tail shape are the best clues.
