Gyrfalcon: The Arctic Ghost
The Gyrfalcon (Falco rusticolus) is the largest falcon in the world and a bird of the far north.
Identification
Gyrfalcons vary from white to dark gray, with white birds most prized in falconry. They are bulky with broad, pointed wings and a powerful build.
Habitat and Diet
Breeding on Arctic cliffs, they prey on ptarmigan, seabirds, and waterfowl. In winter some move south into southern Canada and the northern U.S.
Status
Generally secure but sensitive to disturbance at nest sites. More falcon profiles in the Falcons hub.
